Sonal’s Flower Vase

One day, Sonal’s father gave her a nice flower vase. Sonal was very happy because she was fond of flowers. The following morning, she went to the garden and plucked roses. She arranged them beautifully in her new flower vase and put it in the living room. The living room was well adorned with the flower vase and the fragrance of the fresh flowers permeated the atmosphere.

This became a daily routine for Sonal.

One day, Sonal was sitting in the living room and playing with her pet cat. Suddenly, a stranger entered the room. The cat was so frightened on seeing him that she scampered out of the room. As she was going, her leg hit the flower vase and it broke into pieces.

Sonal was furious with the cat. She picked up a stick and ran after the cat to hit her. But the cat swiftly ran out of the house and climbed up a tree in the garden.

When Sonal saw the broken pieces of the flower vase, she was so dejected that she cried the whole day. She even refused to eat. Her parents tried to console her, but it was all in vain.

At last, Sonal’s mother showed her the mirror and said, “Sonal, look at your face in the mirror. Do you see how you look?”

When Sonal saw her face in the mirror, she was shocked. After a bath in the morning, when she stood in front of the mirror, her face looked fresh and beautiful. But now her face looked ugly because of her anger and tears. She immediately turned her face away from the mirror.

Crying, Sonal said, “Mother, why do I look so ugly in the mirror?”

Sonal’s mother cuddled her and said, “My dear child, your face looks ugly because of your anger. But your soul becomes uglier than your face because, when you get angry, the soul, too, is scarred.”

Mother’s kind and gentle words had a magical effect on Sonal.

Sonal, at once, calmed down. She promised her mother that she would never get angry.

Moral –
Our anger hurts us more than anyone else.
Kind and gentle words will appease an angry man.
Never grieve over small losses.

The Happy Man’s Shirt

Once upon a time, there lived a king. He had all the comforts and luxuries in his palace. He had a big retinue of servants to look after all his needs and to serve him day and night. In spite of all this, the king was always sorrowful and worried.

One day, the king went to meet a learned saint. He bowed to him in reverence and said, “O holy man, I have all the luxuries in my palace; yet, I am unhappy and worried. Can you show me a way to be always happy and cheerful?”

The saint heard the king patiently and said, “O king! There is only one solution to your unhappiness. Only for one night, you will have to wear a happy man’s shirt and go to sleep.”

The king thought that it was a very easy solution to his problem.

The king called his most trusted men and asked them to travel all over the kingdom in search of a happy man.

The king’s men went to each and every village in the kingdom, but they did not find even a single happy man. Every man they met had some sorrow in life. Some grieved because they were poor, while others grieved because they had not achieved name and fame. Some complained that they had no children, while others regretted having bad children. Some men were unhappy because of their wives, while others were dejected because they were uneducated and ignorant. Thus, every man had some sorrow in his life.

After a long and tiring search, the king’s men went to a beggar who was sitting by the road-side. The beggar was merrily whistling a tune.

The king’s men asked him, “Hey friend! Are you really a happy man? Have you no sorrow in your life?”

“Friends, I have no sorrow in my life. I am very happy,” replied the beggar.

The king’s men looked relieved and they said, “Ah! We have been searching for a man like you. Our king needs the shirt of a happy man like you for a night. If you give your shirt to the king for a night, he will reward you handsomely. You will not have to beg for alms for the rest of your life. So will you please give your shirt to us?”

The beggar laughed and said, “Forgive me, my friends. I am sorry to say that I am not able to fulfill the king’s wish because I have no shirt.”

“Well, in that case, how do you call yourself a happy man?” asked the king’s men with great surprise.

“Friends, I am really happy because I do not desire to earn name, fame and wealth. I lead a very simple life and I am a contented man. That is the reason why I am happy” said the beggar.

The king’s men returned to the palace and told the king about what the happy beggar had said about happiness.

The king now understood that when comforts and luxuries exceed the minimum needs, they lead to sorrow and miseries in life.

Moral – A simple and contented life makes a man happy.

Thought – Our ever increasing needs lead to sorrow and miseries in our lives. Therefore, we should reduce our needs.

A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

On the outskirts of a small town, there was an old banyan tree. A crow lived in that tree.

One day, the crow saw a hunter coming towards the tree. He had a big net and grains of rice in his hands. The alert crow warned all the birds. “The hunter is coming here,” he said loudly. He will spread his net and scatter some grains of rice. Do not be lured by those grains.”

All the birds living in other trees also heard the crow’s warning. Meanwhile, the hunter spread his net and scattered the grains of rice. He then hid himself behind a tree. But no bird came to peck at the grains.

Just then a flock of pigeons came flying to the spot. When they saw the grains of rice scattered on the ground, they swooped to peck at them. The crow cawed and said, “Do not be lured by the grains. You will be caught in the net.”

But the pigeons did not heed the warning. They could not resist the temptation to eat the grains and so they flew down to the ground. All the pigeons were caught in the net. They were distressed by their own plight!

The hunter was delighted. He ran to the net. But meanwhile, the leader of the pigeons said, “Do not lose courage. We will all fly together and take this net along with us. Come on…”

Before the hunter could reach the net, all the pigeons flapped their wings and flew away together. And with them flew the hunter’s net!

The hunter stood there helplessly and watched his net go high up in the sky along with the pigeons. Disappointed and angry, he said, “I have lost not only the pigeons but also my precious net.” He stood there till the pigeons and the net disappeared from his sight. He sighed and returned home.

The crow was curious to know what would happen to the pigeons. So he flew behind them.

When the leader of the pigeons was sure that the hunter was not following them, he said, “Friends, let us go to my friend, the mouse.”

The pigeons flew towards the mouse’s hole. When they reached the hole, the leader of the pigeons said, “O mouse! Please come out.”

When the mouse heard the pigeon’s voice, he came out of the hole. He was shocked to see his dear friend and the other pigeons caught in the net. The mouse ran fast to cut the net and free them.

The leader of the pigeons said, “Please free my loved ones first. I would like to be freed last.”

The mouse began to quickly cut the net with his sharp teeth. After freeing all the pigeons, he freed his friend, the leader of the pigeons. He then said, “Friend, you have done your duty as the leader. Whenever you need me, call me.” The mouse then bid the pigeons goodbye.

The flock of pigeons flapped their wings and flew away.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed,” said the crow, as he flew away.

The King Who Loved Trees

Once upon a time, there lived a king who was very fond of trees. He loved trees so much that every year, he would have many trees planted in the fallow lands in his kingdom. The king said to his people, “Forests protect animals and the animals in turn protect the forests. And both, animals and trees, are very useful to man.”

To illustrate his point, the king would narrate the following story to his people:

One day, all the trees in a forest complained to God, “There are many wild animals in this forest. Human beings are afraid of them and so they do not come to the forest. We feel lost without human beings around us. So, we request you to remove all the wild animals from the forest.”

God granted their request and removed all the wild animals from the forest. Now the human beings were no longer afraid of animals and so they started coming to the forest and cutting trees. The trees once again prayed to God to send the wild animals back into the forest so that they could protect themselves from human beings.

One day, all the animals in the forest complained to God, “There are so many trees in the forest that we are unable to move freely. We are not able to save our lives from hunters.”

God granted the request of the animals and He removed all the trees from the forest. But without trees, it became very easy for the hunters to trap or kill the animals. As a result, the number of animals in the forest began to decrease rapidly. The animals then prayed to God to plant the trees back into the forest.

God said, “Animals and plants are very useful to one another. They protect one another. They add to the beauty and prosperity of the earth.”

Through this story, the king would try to convince and inspire the people to save trees and protect them.

Now it so happened that, in spite of the king’s rigorous campaign to save trees, a farmer cut a mahudo tree in his farm. When the king came to know about it, he immediately ordered his guards to arrest the farmer to know about it.

The farmer came to the court of the king and confessed his crime.

The king decided to punish the farmer for his grave offence. He said, “There is a huge lake in our kingdom. As a punishment for your offence, I want you to plant and rear ten trees around the lake, every year, for the next ten years.”

All the people of the kingdom highly praised their king for his love for trees.

The farmer planted and reared a hundred trees in ten years.

Moral -
Do not fell trees; save trees.
Grow more trees and save our environment.
We must protect birds and animals.
