Noun

Definition - A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, animal, group and idea or feelings.

Noun Examples -
Ram, Mohan, Radha, Jo etc. - Person
Ranchi, India, America, Delhi etc. - Place
Table, chair ball, pen, pencil etc. - Things
class, army, gang, bunch of...etc. - group
Joy, fear, beauty, strength, anger etc. - feelings or idea

Kinds of Noun with examples

Mainly there are five types of Nouns -

1. Proper Nouns - Proper nouns are the name of some particular person, place or thing. They are special names.
Sunday is a holiday.
Delhi is the capital of India.
Mohan is my brother.
Alen is my friend.

2. Common Nouns - Common Nouns are the names of person, place, animals, things that belong to the same kind and class. They are not special or individual name.
The dog is a domestic animal.
Birds fly.
We worship a river.
He lives in a big city.

3. Collective Nouns - A collection of people, animals or things of the same kind is called Collective Noun.

Class, Army, Crowd, gang, Bundle, etc.

Examples -
Indian army is very strong.
Where is my bunch of keys.

4. Material Nouns - Stands for matter or substance which things are made is called Material Noun.

wood, silver, Iron, gold etc.
Iron is a heavy metal.
wood is used to make furniture.

5. Abstract Nouns - The name of Quality, state, action of a person or thing, emotion or concept.

Love, necessity, poverty, kindness, happy etc.

Examples -
Poverty is a curse.
Never tell a lie.

Modern Classification of Noun

According to modern classification there are three kinds of Nouns -
Proper Nouns
Countable Nouns - The nouns that can be counted is called Countable Nouns.

Countable nouns are -
Proper Nouns
Common Nouns
Collective Nouns

Examples - cow, dog, cat, man, boy, girl, apple, pen, table, box, tree, class, road, village, room etc.

2. Uncountable Nouns - The nouns than can not be counted but we can weigh. Two types of uncountable nouns are -
Material Nouns
Abstract Nouns

Examples - gold, silver, iron, water, rice, love, music, honesty, childhood, goodness etc.

3. Concrete Nouns - refers to people or things that exist physically.

Except Abstract noun all four types of nouns are in Concrete Noun.

4. Compound Nouns - made up of two or more singular words.

textbook, snowball, seafood, sunflower etc.

5. Singular Noun - refers one person, place, animal or thing.

Pen, cat, dog, table etc.

6. Plural Nouns - refers more than one person, place, animal or things.

pens, cats, dogs, tables etc.

The man stood before the jury begging for mercy.
A bunch of keys was hanging on the door-knob.
The crowd gave a standing ovation to the performers.
Visitors are not allowed to enter the gate of the hotel.
