Verb Definition
A verb denotes an action or a state of being. In other words, a Verb is used for saying something about a person or thing.examples -
She writes.
I felt happy.
Ashoka was a great king.
Kinds or Types of Verbs -
Main Verbs and Auxiliary VerbsPrincipal or Main Verbs - Principal or Main Verbs do not require any other verb to make sense.
He reads.
I speak English.
We respect our teachers and elders.
He is an M.L.A.
Auxiliary or Helping Verbs - Auxiliary or Helping Verbs help the Principal Verbs to form tense mood etc. There are two kinds of Auxiliary verbs-
1. Primary Auxiliary -
(i) "Be" form of Auxiliary -
a. is/am/are = Present tense
b. was/were = Past Tense
c. been/be/being
Examples -
He is a student. |(be)
She was playing. (be)
Note - Main verbs of "be" form also called linking verbs.
(ii) "do" form of Auxiliary -
a. do = Present form plural
b. does = Present form singular
b. did = past form (Simple past Negative and Interrogative)
Examples -
They do not swim.
She does not play.
Does Mohan play cricket?
Do you write poems?
(iii) "Have" form of Primary Auxiliary -
a. Has = Present form Singular
b. have = Present form Plural
c. Had = Past form
Examples -
I have a book. ( have = main verb)
I have done my work. (have helping verb)
She had a car. (had as main v.)
She had written a poem. (auxiliary helping v.)
2. Modal Auxiliary -Modal Auxiliaries express the mode of action denotes by the main verbs.
Shall, Should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, ought to, used to are modal auxiliary verbs.
Examples -
You should help your friends.
I can do this sum.
We must obey the rules.
You ought to help your neighbours.
Transitive Verb and Intransitive Verb
Transitive Verb - When the action passes on to an object, it is called a Transitive Verb. It requires an object.
Examples -
She sang a song.
They play cricket.
I wrote a poem.
Intransitive Verb - When the action does not passes to an object, it is called a Intransitive Verb. It has no object.
Examples -
Birds fly.
Mohan runs very fast.
They were going to market.
The aeroplane flew.

Note - A transitive verb takes object as noun or pronoun not prepositions.
