When the writer was nine years old he got Kari, the elephant and Kari was five months old. He lived in a pavilion under a thatched roof that lay on thick tree stumps to support the light-weighted thatched roof, so that it would not fall when Kari moved.

Kari enjoyed his morning bath in the river. He would lie in the water for a long time. He would squeal with pleasure as his friend rubbed water down his back.

Kari did not like imperfect twigs. So the writer had to climb all kinds of trees to get most delicate and tender twigs. It took a long time.

Once Kari saved the life of a drowning boy. Near the river Kari himself planted in the sand and could not move aside. So to save the drowning boy Kari pushed his friend into the stream. They took out the boy from the river.

Kari was like a baby. The main points of comparisons are -

Once Kari helped himself stealing all the bananas in the house without anyone noticing it. He did it very cleverly through window with the help of his trunk. Blame of stealing fruits was imposed on the servants and later on the writer. For this the writer punished him.

Kari learnt the commands to sit and to walk. "Dhat" is the instruction to sit and "Mali" is the instruction to walk.

The master call is the most important signal for an elephant to learn. It is a hissing howling sound. It is a mixed sound of a snake and a tiger. When anybody loses in jungle with elephant he has to give the master call. Hearing it the elephant starts pulling tree-branches and makes all animals frightened. The elephant makes a way out of jungle.

जब लेखक 9 वर्ष का था उसे कारी हाथी मिला| कारी उस समय 5 महीने का था| वह एक पंडाल में फूस से लदे छत के नीचे रहता था जो पेड़ के ठूँठ पर था जिससे की कारी टकरा जाए तो यह न गिरे|

कारी सुबह नदी में नहाने का आनंद लेता था| वह पानी में बहुत समय तक पड़े रहता| जब उसका दोस्त लेखक उसके पीठ पर पानी डालता तो वह ख़ुशी से चिल्लाता|

कारी ख़राब कटे टहनी नहीं खाता था| लेखात उसके लिए कोमल टहनी लाता इसलिए उसे सभी पेड़ो पर चढ़ना होता और समय भी अधिक लगता था|

एक बार कारी ने नदी में डूबते एक लड़के की जान बचाई थी| वह नदी के किनारे बालू पर अपने पैरों को जमाकर रखा था और हिल नहीं पा रहा था| इसलिए उसने लेखक को पानी में धक्का दिया और फिर दोनों मिलकर उस लड़के को पानी से बाहर निकाल लिए|

कारी एक बच्चे की तरह करता था| जैसे -
नहाते समय चिल्लाता था
उसे पक्के केले पसंद थे
वह शरारती था
वह बच्चों की तरह फल चुराता था

एक बार कारी ने चुपचाप खिड़की से अपने सूढ़ को डालकर फल चुराया| इसका दोष पहले तो नौकरो पर और फिर लेखक पर दिया गया| लेखक ने कारी को इसके लिए दंड दिया|

कारी ने बैठने का आदेश सीखा "धत" शब्द से और चलने का आदेश सीखा "माली" शब्द सेा

मास्टर कॉल हाथियो के लिए एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण कॉल है| यह सांप और टाइगर का मिक्स आवाज़ है| जब कोई जंगल में खो जाए तो इस कॉल के द्वारा हाथी पेड़ो को उखाड़ देता है, जानवरों को डरा देता है और बहार निकलने का रास्ता बना लेता है|
