Adverb

Definition - An Adverb is a word which qualifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

That means An Adverb adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Hindi Definition - वे शब्द जो किसी क्रिया (verb), विशेषण (adjective) या अन्य किसी क्रिया-विशेषण (another adverb) की विशेषता बताते हैं|

Examples -

1. She walks fast.

(fast qualifies the verb 'walks'. So 'fast' is an adverb)

2. This is a very sweet apple.

('sweet' is Adjective. very qualifies the adjective 'sweet', So 'very' is an adverb)

3. He runs very fast.

(fast qualifies the verb 'runs'. So 'fast' is an adverb and Very qualifies the adverb 'fast'. So 'Very' is also an adverb )

Kinds or Types of Adverb:-

Firstly three types of Adverbs are -
Simple
Relative
Interrogative



1. Adverbs of Time - They show time of action. They answer the question 'When'

now, soon, after, before, today, yesterday, already,never, late, recently, shortly, immediately, afterwords, tonight etc. are Adverbs of Time.

Examples -
You must go now.
They will come soon.
I have already finished my home work.
I shall go to school tomorrow.
I went market yesterday.

2. Adverbs of Place - They show place of action. They answer the question 'Where'

here, there, everywhere, anywhere, up, down, in, out, within, without, inside, outside, far, near, away, backward, forward etc.

Examples -
Come here.
Keep your book there.
Sit down please.
She has come in.
Go away.

3. Adverbs of Manner- tells how or in what manner an action performs.

quickly, bravely, slowly, gladly, loudly, wisely, carefully, easily, certainly, all, badly, fast, thus, so, well etc.

Examples -
She quickly wrote a poem.
The Soldiers fought bravely.
I shall gladly help you.
Drive carefully.
Radha speaks loudly.

4. Adverbs of Degree - They show how much they qualifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

fully, completely, so, extremely, enough, very, rather, much, more, too, quite, little, partly, fully, wholly, so, any, enough, pretty, as, almost etc are Adverb of Degree.

Examples -
She danced very well.
I am fully agree with you.
He ran too fast.
It is so hot today.
This book is little uninteresting.

5. Adverbs of Frequency or Number - They show how often an action performs.

always, never, often, seldom, never, once, twice..., frequently, secondly, thirdly, again etc. are Adverb of Frequency or Number.

Examples -
He is always late.
She never tells lie.
He has failed twice.
I frequently go to market.
Don't come again.

6. Adverbs of Reason - They show reason of an action and give the answer 'Why'.

so, hence, therefore, on account of, consequently etc.

Examples -

1. It was holiday on account of Republic Day.

2. He was ill, so he was absent.

7. Adverbs of Affirmation or Negation -

Affirmation - yes, certainly, truly, surely etc.

Negation - no, not. nay, never etc.

Examples -
She will surely come.
It is definitely true.
I have never seen him.
She does not go to market.

2. Relative Adverbs -

join two sentences with when, where, why, how and tells about its antecedent (Noun or Pronoun).

Examples -
This is the place where she lives.
I can help you when you will agree.
This is the reason why he did not come.
I know how a cake is baked.

3. Interrogative Adverbs - ask question and come at tbe beginning.

Where, Why, How, When, How much, How long, How far How many etc.

Examples -
Where are you going?
How old are you?
Why are you weeping?
